2.  Americans consume 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving.

3. The heaviest turkey on record weighs a whopping 86 pounds!

Don’t forget that at this time of year, it’s important to get your sprinkler system winterized. Without winterizing your system, excess water sitting in your pipes can freeze, expand, and burst the pipes. Then, when you turn your system on in the spring, the damage can cause swampy areas in your lawn, flooding, and a variety of other issues. Save yourself the trouble, and give us a call today!

Sprinkler Winterization:

 WHAT TO EXPECT

Sprinkler Master goes through a 5 step checklist to winterize your lawn irrigation system.

  1. First, we will shut off your main line or the stop-and-waste valve.
  2. Then, we’ll hook up our commercial air compressor and run air through each zone to ensure that each zone on the sprinkler system is adequately drained to prevent damage.
  3. We then set the sprinkler timer accordingly for winter use.
  4. If necessary, we will open the bleeder valves.
  5. We shut down the backflow by turning the ports to open and putting the ball valves to 45° degrees.

1) Q. When to Winterize your sprinkler system?

  1. The first week of October is a great time in Northern United States to shut of the sprinkler system to prevent damage.

When soil temperatures reach around 40°f – 50°f, lawns will begin going into dormancy. Lawns will start going a greenish yellow and will stay that way till spring. According to Central sod farms (1), Inc. the lawn/grass does this to preserve energy.

2) Q. Why Winterize my lawn Sprinklers?

Every sprinkler system needs to be winterized. Getting your lawn sprinkler system winterized for the cold weather in the Northern United States is crucial for keeping your lawn irrigation system ready for spring and summer next year. This will help with costs of sprinkler repair. To winterize the water must be blown out of your lawn sprinkler system to prevent freezing.

When water is expanded by 10% as it freezes this energy has to go somewhere and it will crack the hardest of materials. Ice will break any part on a sprinkler system including steel pipes and backflow devices, causing a lot of damage and costing money in the spring for sprinkler repair work.  Water can move a 10-15 ton of rocks and a 3 inch solid steel ship hull when frozen. Your sprinkler system has no chance with this amount of power (2). That is why you need to remove water in your lawn sprinkler system in the Northern United States.

Here at Sprinkler Master in the Northern United States we are professional sprinkler technicians. All we do is repair sprinklers, and the majority of sprinkler repair is caused by sprinklers not being winterized, or not doing it properly.

3) How to winterize a sprinkler system

Can you do it yourself or have a friend do it? Yes, with the proper tools, and knowledge. The majority of sprinkler repair in the Northern United States comes from sprinkler systems not being blown out correctly.

The right tools:

The major key when winterizing a sprinkler system is having a large volume of air go through the system.  To do this the common person needs to rent an air compressor for around the same price as Sprinkler Master charges to come do it for you. We are licensed, insured and backup our work. Most sprinkler systems cost around $60 to winterize.

Can I use my home or small air compressor?  When people use their small air compressor almost always it does not work and will take most of your day up. You need around 80-100 cfm (3), an average residential air compressor does 2 cfm. Blowing it out with a small compressor is taking a big risk(4).  To blowout your system it does not matter if your air compress goes up to 100-200 psi you will need air volume and psi to push all the water out of the sprinkler pipes (5).

7 Common lawn Irrigation Mistakes

These seven irrigation mistakes can cost you time, money, and water. Avoid them, and you’ll save yourself tons of hassle! And if you need sprinkler repair, give Sprinkler Master Repair a call!

1) Inaccurate placement of sprinkler heads

Placing your sprinkler heads in the wrong places can cause some areas to not receive enough water, and others to receive an excess. This can cause dry spots and over watering in certain areas.

2) Putting different type of irrigation heads in the same zone

Having different types of heads in the same zone causes inconsistencies in watering patterns, and some area may get more or less water than others. When installing heads, be sure to install the same brand and type.

3) Running the system during the hottest part of the day

Running your system during the wrong part of the day can unnecessarily waste money and water. When you water in the heat, it can cause much of that water to be evaporated, and more water and money has to be used in order to get your lawn the proper amount of water. Watering during the coolest part of the day can avoid this issue.

4) Not installing a smart timer

A smart timer will turn off your sprinkler system when your lawn doesn’t need to be watered, such as when it is raining. This will save you from overwatering, and spending money on water you didn’t need. To learn more about smart timers, click here!

5) Ensure you’re using the correct nozzle spray patterns

Using the wrong spray patterns can make your lawn doesn’t receive enough water, while your sidewalks do. Make sure that when you set your spray patterns that they are the correct length in order to receive maximum efficiency.

6) Watering shrubs, trees, and flower beds separate from the lawn area

Shrubs and trees have a much longer root system than grass, so trees and shrubs need much less water than your grass. When you water them together, you waste unneeded water on the trees and shrubs.

7) Not taking care of issues right away

When something on your system breaks, it’s important that you get it fixed ASAP, because an issue with your system can cause ugly dry spots, bubbling, and a waste of water. If you need a repair, give our expert technicians at Sprinkler Master a call today!

The Grass is Green Even On the “Other Side”

When the sun was blazing and grass was drying up, a touching story was shared by Roger Reissig via Facebook.

It was out of true love, adoration, and a knowledge that love still continues after this life. Mr. Reissig’s sacrifice to go out and water his wife’s grave twice daily for the last year teaches us all that love continues on after death. Originally on Facebook, his story soon went viral. Roger gives an account of the awe-inspiring daily routine of his father, a true sprinkler man. What might seem an ordinary task to him is truly an extraordinary act of devotion.

“It’s been over a year now since Mom left us to go to her Heavenly home. Dad goes out to the grave to visit her twice a day. He has a routine where he clips some roses from his rose garden at home and delivers them to Mom. Then he hooks up a hose and waters her grass twice daily. With the recent drought and hers being one of the only graves getting watered, you can see that Moms stands out from the rest and is very beautiful.” – Roger writes on Facebook.

One scorching summer day while at his wife’s grave, Mr. Reissig noticed a lady nearby with tears in her eyes. He quickly went and offered some words of comfort. He learned that the grave she knelt at held her brother, an SSGT in the US Air Force, who had been taken several years before. After this run in with the family of the soldier, Mr. Reissig, the true sprinkler man, took it upon himself to water the grave of this veteran every day as well as his wife’s.

This is just one story of a remarkable man who decided to do something as simple as watering a grave to honor veterans and loved ones. Though it can be hard to let go, we can always have that love that continues on after this life. God’s love fills the immensity of space; therefore, there is no shortage of love in the universe, only in our willingness to do what is needed to feel it. To do this, Jesus explained we must “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, … soul, … strength, and … mind; and thy neighbor as thyself” (Luke 10:27).  -From Author of Other side of Heaven.

Our goal at Sprinkler Master Repair is to ensure that you can spend time with loved ones and enjoy the things you love. If your sprinklers need to be repaired, contact one our many locations!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Make your mom’s yard beautiful this Mother’s Day. Here are a few tips on how to create some nice looking stripes while mowing her lawn.

The key to creating good, clean stripes in your lawn is to bend the grass blades down in opposite directions. This will allow the light to catch the grass and will create the effect of the light and dark stripes. To do this, you’ll need to have a weighted roller attached to the back of your mower to mat down the grass as you mow.

  1. Get a lawn striping kit or create your own using a pipe and zip ties.
    • Follow this video to create your own striping kit.
  2. Make sure your grass is at a proper height.Sprinkler Repair - Sprinkler Master
    • The taller the grass, the more the roller can bend the grass over to catch the light. We recommend striping your grass when it is about 3 ½ inches tall.
  3. Ensure your grass has a proper thickness.
    • In order to have defined stripes, your lawn needs to be about as thick as carpet.
  4. Mow in straight lines.
    • Straight lines will dramatically increase the striping effect, so be sure to be careful as you create your stripes.
